What or where is this comfort zone?
The comfort zone as they say is where nothing happens and nothing grows, it’s a place void of impulsive action where any potential original thought is soon snubbed out. It is a place that serves only to keep you exactly where you currently are not at any immediate risk of progress. The best explanation I have found refers to the comfort zone as place where you only complete actions that are familiar and routine which allow you to keep your anxiety levels as low possible.
The unrelenting commitment to the norm that aids you in avoiding the things you fear, is exactly what enables you to sit comfortably within your comfort zone. When people say you need to step out of your comfort zone what they are actually saying is that it is time for you to try something new, to do something which makes you anxious but you do it anyway because it is in doing this that you will begin to develop and grow.
It is not our natural operating mode to be working in a place of anxiety however when we speak of doing things which make us step out of our comfort zone we do so on the understanding that taking this action will actually improve our performance and make us more efficient in our work. It is also important to note that while a little anxiety maybe useful in improving performance prolonged operation in this state or when anxiety levels are too high will actually have the opposite effect and will begin to cause your performance to deteriorate.
As women in business playing it safe can actually act as a barrier to your success and development so it is important that you are regularly stepping out of your comfort zone to take on new challenges. Regularly seeking out fresh experiences will help to improve your creativity and emotional resilience and equip you with skills to adapt to changing situations. Unfortunately the thing that holds many back from stepping out of their comfort zone is fear. Fear of failure, fear of letting people down and for some it’s actually fear of the success. The more afraid you are the smaller your comfort zone becomes and the harder it is to step out from. When operating from a small comfort zone you may either always be in a state of feeling anxious or limiting yourself from experiencing all life has to offer therefore seizing every opportunity to step out of your comfort zone is highly recommended as it will enable you to enjoy more of what life has to offer.
In order to overcome the fear of stepping out of your comfort zone you will need to deal with your resistance to uncomfortable levels of uncertainty which is ultimately what is preventing you from taking action. Stepping out of your comfort zone and becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable is a great way to combat this. Sticking to what is familiar is easy and safe and so when feeling lazy, deflated or unmotivated it is very easy to revert back to what is easy and not try something new. However taking action and stepping out of your comfort zone will have the complete opposite effect leaving you feeling motivated and fully charged.
Expanding your comfort zone requires you to strike a balance of being in a place where you are indeed anxious but those levels of anxiety are manageable this should be somewhere firmly outside of your comfort zone and in the middle of your learning zone. Confidence levels can be greatly increased when you conquer your fears and take on new challenges. The combination of success and self-doubt when tackled will help with your personal growth and encourage you to seek out new opportunities rather than waiting for them to come to you.
Has entrepreneurs you cannot afford to remain idle in your comfort zone you must step out and rise to the challenges.
